This is what happens when you expose for the highlights with an ancient camera (an Agfa Super Isolette from the 1950s). I might to have to get it checked out as it's usually very sharp and doesn't distort quite this much but on the other hand there's an awful lot of straight lines in the frame, many in the out of focus areas which will advertise any problems.
As an aside it's also my first foray into DSLR scanning, seems to be working well and it's super fast compared to a flatbed. If you use an iPad instead of a light box like this scan the pixels give you a fairly neat newsprint type effect.
